Social Media Best Practices- Keeping your Business Protected Online

Follow the Rules
Each social media platform has its own set of rules outlining what content and behavior is allowed from its participants. Before you become an active participant, be sure to read the rules. This will prevent you from inadvertently abusing a platform’s participant policy and alienating other users.

Understand Etiquette
Just because you understand how to interact in a business meeting or out with a client at lunch does not mean you know how to interact through social media channels. Terms like “direct message,” “retweet,” “Facebook me,” “sponsored post” or “share” are all relatively new terms born from the use of social media platforms. If you’re new to social media, take time to observe how your peers interact, what kind of communication seems to be most effective, and what participants are most receptive to. Check with each social media platform for a code of conduct or best practices to help guide you.

Be Responsive
Social media requires consistency and follow up skills similar to those used in other forms of business interaction. If you forget to return client calls or do not respond to email in a timely manner, clients may forget about you or fail to take your business seriously. Similarly, if you do not participate consistently in social media, listen to your audience feedback, and develop content that matches their needs, you run the risk of losing your audience altogether.
